The fortress of Polignac crowns a flat-topped volcanic rock above its village in the Velay, a few kilometres from Le Puy-en-Velay. Within the ramparts of its broad platform stands a square keep some thirty-two metres high, the seat of the powerful Polignac family, viscounts of the Velay. Dark lava stone builds the houses of the village at the foot of the rock, tying them to the basalt above.
