About this artwork

The Château de Montal, above the Dordogne valley in the Lot, turns two faces to the world: an austere medieval front guarded by round towers, and courtyard facades of the early French Renaissance carved with extraordinary richness. Jeanne de Balsac built the château between 1519 and 1534, and only two of the four planned wings were finished. Busts of her family look out from the courtyard walls, and a monumental staircase climbs in a square pavilion. In the Second World War the château sheltered paintings from the national collections in Paris, among them the most famous portrait in the world.

Every Jason D’s Vision image is an AI-generated artistic interpretation of a real place — original artwork, not a photograph. The label bar on the download may show a creative daylight scenario; that is artistic staging, not a record of a real event.
