Curator narration for this scene.
On a rocky plateau above the meeting of the Dordogne valley rivers, the Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux lifts walls and towers of red sandstone visible for miles. Its plan is almost a triangle, with round towers at the angles, a square keep and three lines of enclosing walls. Begun about 1100 by the barons of Castelnau, it was enlarged over five centuries and adapted to artillery. The opera singer Jean Mouliérat bought the ruin in 1895, restored it and filled it with his collection of furniture and sacred art.
