Curator narration for this scene.
In a meander of the river Vonne near Poitiers, the Gallo-Roman site of Sanxay preserves the monuments of a rural sanctuary of the first and second centuries, built around healing waters. A great theatre backed against the slope held some 6,500 spectators, and across the grounds stand the remains of extensive thermal baths and a rare octagonal temple. Father Camille de La Croix excavated the site between 1881 and 1883; much was then covered again, and the visible ruins spread over some twenty hectares of meadow.
